> About
This new research program aspires to reinvigorate an intellectual tradition represented most famously by the namesakes of the two research centers that came together to form ANHIMA, Louis Gernet and Gustave Glotz. Over the last few years, Greek law has emerged to become one of the highest priorities in the two programs of our research team. For the program “Identity Constructions and Cultural Transfers in the Ancient World,” an international colloquium was held at Reims in 2008, which has now been published in the series Publications de la Sorbonne (Transferts culturels et droits dans le monde grec et hellénistique, Paris, 2012). This research program also organized the 18th International Congress of Greek and Hellenistic Law (XVIIIe Congrès international de droit grec et hellénistique, Symposion 2011), published in Vienna in 2013.
Within the framework of the political program, a monthly seminar held over two years was dedicated to the study of Greek law : after its creation in 2009-2010 as a reading group dedicated to the juristic anthropological work of Louis Gernet, it focused in 2010-2011 specifically on two questions, namely, landed property (public and private) and family law in the classical city. The new program seeks to bring together the wide-ranging interest in Greek law so as to create an autonomous research program within the ANHIMA team. This seems all the more necessary in light of the fact that the revival of the study of Greek law has not found in France as much echo as in most other European countries. It goes without saying that Greek law has undoubtedly become one of the most lively fields of classical studies over the last thirty years in the United Kingdom, Italy, the United States, and Germany. The recent studies conducted within the framework of the Symposion association have benefited particularly from the emancipation of the study of Greek law from the tutelage of the Romanist tradition. Indeed, scholars have progressively realized that only an interdisciplinary approach open to both anthropology and the history of social practices can truly do justice to Greek law. This is precisely the perspective, complimentary to the one adopted by legal experts, that our work strives to maintain.
