> Topic, objectives, methodology
The studies pursued in the framework of this program revolve around the emperor, the senate, and provincial aristocracies. We will study practices of government, elite participation in policies pursued by the princeps and his entourage, and the ideological discourse that emerges around these practices, both by way of cultural go-betweens and places where the representation of power reveals its extent and nature. We will pay particular attention to the makeup of these elites and to the regeneration of the ruling class brought on by the penetration of provincials into all levels of Roman notability, as they found their place in the Roman world while recalling their political heritage. The project will cover the chronological arc from the 1st to the 5th century (potentially with forays into the periods before and after), adopting approaches from several disciplines (epigraphy, prosopography, numismatics, ancient history, topography, and the study of material culture).
Three topics are highlighted :
1- Italy, Gaul, and Africa in studies based on the epigraphic and archeological evidence, with a focus on questions of institutional and social history (municipal life, local elites). This topic will benefit from close collaboration with the research team on Roman Africa directed by M. Dondin-Payre and M. Sebaï (“Archeology, Identity, Heritage” in the “Corpus” research program).
2- The Center of Power, revolving around the figure of the princeps, in particular the places of power in Rome and different forms of central government (senate, chancellery).
3- Rome in the East (1st-4th cent.), with a focus on three projects concerning senators from Greek-speaking provinces, Greek-speaking elites in the princeps’ sphere and imperial court, and certain aspects of civic life in the 3rd century. This project will be conducted in collaboration with the research program dedicated to provincial coinage directed by M. Amandry and A. Hostein (under the “Corpus” research program).
