Interest in the body has grown in the West over the past forty years. Historical research attests to it in its particular way. In the field of Ancient History, this interest reaches back to the 1990s. Since then, studies dedicated to the body and also to clothing have shown the interest of these subjects, both for renewing scholarly methods by investigating societies in a new light and for modifying our view of societies and their interpretation.
Following this trend, scholarly analyses have reinvigorated an approach that was, since at least the 19th century, more “aesthetic” and traditional. They have accorded a more important place to the symbolic value of clothing, and not merely to pieces of clothing and their materiality for reconstructing realia. Associating the body and clothing has greatly enriched this line of inquiry.
❋ The 1st research theme, “The Body, Gestures, and Clothing in the Ancient World : A Historical and Anthropological Reading” (directed by F. Gherchanoc and V. Huet), follows this approach. Drawing on literary and epigraphic texts and the iconography of vases and reliefs, we intend to pursue this research program undertaken in conjunction with the University of Western Brittany (director : Valérie Huet) over the past four years and for the next until 2018. We will continue to decipher markers of identity, signs of alterity, and clothing norms and transgressions, basing our analyses on the gestures associated with clothing and with nudity and on the bodily performances that ensue from them. It aims at characterizing a personality or even a common mode of action (gestures) peculiar to a given society in specific contexts (both attitudes expected and recognized by all and particular strategies of distinction).
We will work in the form of workshops (one or two per year). The program will conclude with a an international colloquium to be held in 2018.
❋ The 2nd research theme, “Body Parts in the Ancient World” (directed by F. Gherchanoc and S. Wyler) seeks to analyze the parts of the body (eyes, mouth, breasts, stomach, penis, thighs, knees, hair, etc.) by asking how the ancients represented them and constructed one or more bodies (male, female, of citizens, of barbarians, young, old). The different parts of the body are the seats of different fluids, emotions, and characteristics (strength and weakness) in an individual, by function of his or her gender, age, origin, and so on. We will study these from a historical and anthropological perspective. The second aspect of the research program is to determine what care, jewelry, decorations, and ornaments were associated with the different parts of the body. The next question is the arrangement and presentation of the self as language. Adopting a similar approach, we will also explore inversions of sexual roles (hermaphrodites, men impregnated in the thigh or head, bearded women, etc.) and anatomical deviations. The goal is to better understand the relationship of the ancient Greeks and Romans to the body/bodies, as they display or hide them, construct and deconstruct them, and develop theories about them in their diverse elements.
The two topics addressed in this research program enable us to extend and bring to a conclusion the reflections pursued since 2004, especially at the Paris Diderot University-Paris 7, on clothing and the body and on identities in the ancient world. We hope to pursue and inspire new questions, motivate young scholars, and demonstrate the relevance and promise of the comparative approach. Moreover, bridges can be built to other programs and lines of research within our team (“Gender and Politics,” “Family and Kinship,” “Religious Dynamics”), and joint projects may occasionally be undertaken.
The program will take the form of workshops in the ancient history seminars of the university Paris 7, as well as two research days per year for each of the two subjects and a final colloquium to bring them into dialogue with one another. Each meeting will be published, some in digital form, some in print (articles and a monograph).

This second research day is a follow-up to the one held on December 6th, 2014 about the “Démembrements corporels dans les mondes anciens : mythes et pratiques” (“Dismembering bodies in the ancient worlds : myths and practices”). After having studied the issues related to the tearing to pieces of the bodies, it appeared necessary and complementary to consider the unity and the cohesion of the bodies in the light of their composition and decomposition, in the scientific views (biological, medical, mathematical), in the philosophical, historical views… as well as in the artistic solutions and resolutions. Of which parts does the body consist of ? How can we conceive a bodily whole or a whole body ? Is the body unity or the sum of its parts ? Are there some “manufacturing defects” that interchange or eliminate some of its parts ? How far can the hybridization by the addition of irrelevant parts go ? What are the consequences of these assemblies for the judgement on the beauty and ugliness of the bodies, products of the nature or of artistic compositions ? These questions will be asked to experts in texts and images of the Greek and Roman worlds.
