Doctoral Seminar 2014-2015

Open to MA students, doctoral students, and postdocs, this seminar seeks to foster exchange between students by providing an informal setting for dialogue and joint discussion. At joint workshops or periodic presentations, each participant is invited to share his or her special expertise and scholarly approaches with the other students. The seminar benefits fully from the range of periods, sources, and research topics covered by the ANHIMA team.
 
The seminar will take place monthly, on a Wednesday, from 18:00 to 20:00, in the hall of the Gernet-Glotz library. Sessions will take the form of a collective workshop, in which the participants discuss a predetermined document, or individual presentations of a research tool or personal study connected to the theme of the seminar.
 
The subject of the seminar for the year 2014-2015 is the study of minor figures.
How may secondary, insignificant, or marginal figures from Antiquity have symbolic, moral, political, or scholarly value ? Analysis of biographical statements, from Antiquity to its reception and to current historiographical analyses, allows us to explore the construction of a figure, whether real or fictional, whose initial role is minor. This topic is being explored through collective, systematic study of Plutarch’s Life of Coriolanus and individual presentations based on the different research topics of doctoral students. The students are invited to propose topics for presentations.
