The database Imagerie grecque classique covers the iconography of Greek ceramics, especially Attic ceramics, between the 6th and 4th centuries B.C. It occasionally includes sculpture, terracottas, gems, and coins, when their iconography is connected to the special topics of this database.
The database consists of the photo library of the ANHIMA Center (formerly the Louis Gernet Center); slides from the collection made between 1975 and 2006 were digitalized between 2006 and 2009.
This photo library was established to facilitate courses taught by Jean-Pierre Vernant at the Collège de France (1975-1984) and later the iconography seminars taught by members of the Gernet Center, up to the year 2006.
The collection consists primarily of thematic series: besides the vases shown in the exhibition “La Cité des Images” from 1984, it contains images of Dionysus, satyrs, sacrifice, divine assemblies, metamorphosis, mirrors, frontal depictions, the cosmos, banquets, war, centaurs, Orpheus, Marsyas, etc.
Other series are connected to field missions and concern particular museums: Boston, New York, Moscow, Rome (Vatican), Naples, Athens, Rouen, Boulogne-sur-Mer.
Other, less extensive series are dedicated to painters: Euphronios, the Kleophrades Painter, Exekias, the Painter of the half-Palmettes, the François Vase.
The objects collected are thus succinctly described in work files, which in turn are linked to a table of photos.
