Jesuits and the Tartar

“Os Tartaros” (the Manchu) began to appear in Jesuit reports in late 1610s. Since then, the Manchu had been more and more concerned in Jesuit writings, and the Jesuit attitudes, opinions, evaluations, and standpoints to the Manchu were diverse and were developing through different periods. In this lecture, I will show the Jesuit descriptions of the Manchu, their narratives of the Ming-Qing wars, and will analyze the diversity and changes of the Jesuit attitudes to the Manchu and Qing reign.
