The institutional management of resources in Kassite Babylonia (16th-12th c. BCE)

1.“Sources for the socio-economic history of Kassite Babylonia: an overview”
The lecture presents the textual sources available to investigate the social and economic history of the Kassite kingdom, providing an overview of their geographic, chronological and typological distribution and discussing their specific features as written artefacts as well as archival tools developed in order to best suit the needs of their users.

2.“The management of resources (1): land tenure and agricultural production”
Agriculture represented the basis of Mesopotamian economy throughout its whole history, and Kassite Babylonia makes no exception to this rule. The lecture will outline the complex issue of land tenure in the Kassite kingdom and discuss how the archival texts can contribute to explain what kind of control the central administration exercised over agricultural production.

3.““Who’s who” and “who does what”: from names to individuals, from individuals to society”
During this lecture we will take a closer look at the persons who kept the administrative and economic organizations running, from the officials in charge of managing the resources and supervising different activities to the workers employed in the productive system. By doing so, we will also discuss the potential contribution – but also the intrinsic limits – of a prosopographic study as a means to better understand the underlying socio-economic structures.

4.“The management of resources (2): after the harvest”
Building upon the previous lecture, we will follow the “life circle” of agricultural products after the harvest, i.e. from their storage to their distributions for various purposes. Thereby, the lecture will tackle also other aspects of the economic and administrative system, such as the organization of storage facilities, the provisioning of food for different groups of workers and the employment of cereals for milling and brewing activities.
