This international symposium gathers scholars from diverse disciplinary backgrounds working on the topic of heritage and museums. Their contributions offer a wide range of case studies highlighting past and present processes of patrimonialization. The participants examine the historically situated projects and procedures that transform places, people, ’traditions’, and artefacts into heritage to be protected, exhibited, and emphasized. They analyse the stakes that underlie the selection of objects, persons and ’traditions’ to be preserved and/or displayed, the choice of places and forms of exhibits and their transformation into sites, the intersections of a diversity of actors at local, national, regional and global scales, and the encounters between Western heritage paradigms and alternative models of patrimonialization.
